Very few biological disciplines in the last decade have experienced such huge leap in our understanding of its fundamental questions as the field of Developmental Biology. A highly integrative discipline, it has allowed researchers, by taking full advantage of advances in Classical Embryology, Cell Biology, Genomics, Molecular Genetics, Bioinformatics and Evolution, in a wide range of model organisms, to generate a highly flexible and powerful set of experimental and conceptual tools that helped to cast new light on the mechanisms underlying complex processes such as tissue and cell differentiation, morphogenesis as well as the evolution and conservation of developmental signaling pathways. This progress in turn, has led to a renewed interest in the study of Biological Development, both from the standpoint of basic research and for its potential to generate new and exciting applications of medical, industrial and pharmaceutical interest. Also in Brazil, the new century saw the growth and consolidation of a small, but very active and internationally respected community of developmental biologists, with the establishment of several new research groups led by highly promising young scientists

In this context, and celebrating 10 years of successful organization of biennial international conferences on Developmental Biology in this country, the V International Simposium of Developmental Biology will have as its unifying theme “Post Genomic Developmental Genetics: The first decade”, where both the striking advances in the field during the last ten years or so and future directions will be discussed, as well as their implications for our understanding of the mechanisms of human development and disease. Areas covered include Developmental Genomics, Evolutionary Developmental Biology, Plant Developmental Biology, Signaling Pathways Development and Disease, Stem Cells and Emerging Model Organisms in Developmental Biology. The official language will be English. As in previous meetings, it will be an exceptional opportunity for researchers and students working in these areas, as well as in Embryology, Cell Biology, Molecular Genetics, Biochemistry, Evolution, Oncology and Translational Medicine, to acquaint themselves with latest advances and trends in the field by listening to some of its most prestigious practitioners, and discuss their results in the highly interdisciplinary and interactive setting of poster sessions. These opportunities will be further increased by the realization of the V Meeting of Developmental Biology Students as a satellite meeting to the Simposium.

To conclude, It is our expectation that the V International Simposium of Developmental Biology will fulfill its role as a forum where Initiatives and strategies aiming at expanding, strengthening and internationally integrating the Brazilian Community of Developmental Biologists could be discussed, including the formation of a National Society.
